Hobo Gulch Mill is Christened
August 28, 2004

In just under a year, Bill Andersen took his lumber mill (aka car barn) from scratch to done - Hobo Gulch Mill is open for business!

Quite a crowd gathered for today's festivities.

Bill explained that lumbering was in his blood. He worked for 37 years with the forest service, and a couple years before that as a scaler at a lumber mill.

The siding at the Mill was to be named in honor of Dick Rayburn, who was a "partner in crime" on this project. Bill just couldn't decide which sign to use. The group thought he should use both together!

Bill provided quite a feast!

The stack of lumber may look impressive, but we're told it's hollow.

Chef Keith.

1,955 5-gallon buckets of dirt were removed from the site and moved .9 miles to the other side of the railroad where fill was needed.

Bill thanked the many folks who helped and encouraged him on this project. Mike who surveyed (quite accurately, as it turned out!). Harry for opening up the trees. Sol for dirt and drainage work. And Bob, Karl, Bob, Dennis, Jack, Bud, Keith, Jamie... And Mary and Jenny, nursemaids!

Some rolling stock inside the mill.

Bill decided that the proper christening method would be to pummel the building with water balloons (from the big red tub). What a hoot!

The attic area inside the taller section of the mill. Bill tried to explain that there were very comfortable quarters (doghouse?!) in there with a 42" plasma TV wrapped around a corner, but it was never located.

"Old Goat Rayburn" with Karl supplying the horns.

The water balloon christening made water run off the roof. Here, too, you can see the colors of the mill: Hawaiian Cinder, Manhattan Mist, and Grey Timberwolf.

Three amigos.

And of course, the Hobo Gulch Mill cake!

Future additions include a 4-foot extension for the log ramp entrance, log pond, tepee burner, and corrugated metal roof.
